How to improve engagement and wellbeing at work: Search seminar series review

Working with our friends & partners at Search Consultancy, Lightbulb Leaders have been delighted to be the kenynote speakers at their latest series of employee engagement & wellbeing events running throughout the UK. 

 

Lightbulb's speaker was Ruth Cooper-Dickson, who has led the sessions and has been delighted by the real desire of the participants to build meaningful employee engagement throughout the UK in companies of all shapes and sizes.

 

Ruth said "Over the course of the seminars that I have spoken at, many of the delegates were still shocked and unaware surrounding the statistics around mental wellbeing and the costs associated within the workplace of not managing it well. Part of our content shows the need for a solid business case of engagement and wellbeing is vital to get buy in from the leadership of organisations.  Also, unveiling our unique acceleration model has really helped the attendees and the feeback so far has been fantastic."

 

Ohter observations include having a stand-alone wellbeing strategy. It is still very rare and many organisations are at the start of their journey in seeing this as a central boardroom level conversation. Engagement comes from getting all of the business involved and this has been evident with the success of wellbeing networks or forums which are business-led and not seen as HR initiatives.

 

Discussions around mental health first aid are still very new and it is still unknown as a qualification – something here at Lightbulb Leaders that we are determined to change. It was agreed that it is a great tool to start to breakdown stigma and discrimination but also allows employees to understand their own mental wellbeing.  As 1 in 3 sicknotes is now for a mental health related issue, having the expertise to signpost and spot symptoms is critical.  Ruth said " I'm delighted that we are able to bring our MHFA 2 day programme to Lightbulb's Manchester Office on 8 & 9 January 2018. Participants will be able to become qualified Mental Health First Aiders in their workplaces.  Just like being a physical first aider, delegates will be able to provide mental health support and help for both colleagues and visitors alike." It was interesting and pleasing to note that many organisations are carrying out an employee engagement survey however rarely does this seem to be led from the top. Where success has found with delegates, it is those organisations where there is high level champions and advocates – this leads to a good response rate and a tangible action plan to follow up on results. Those who are not afraid to communicate the results good and bad seem to appear more authentic and open and this helps to build trust. 

 

It goes without saying that an environment which is engaging for employees allows them to thrive and be much more productive. The virtuous circle is then complete as they will be the best they can be, less likely to leave and be off work due to sickness.
